World orientation

Geography, nature & technology, and history are now intertwined in the subject ‘World Orientation’. Learning about your surroundings fosters respect, knowledge, and a perspective on your place in the world. The children's world view grows with them, and our education adapts to this.

World Orientation in grades 1 and 2

In grades 1 and 2, we work with themes about the world. We dress up as hunters or farmers, organize Dutch weeks, or dine out in our world restaurant.

Blink method integrated from grade 3

From grade 3, we use the digital Blink method. Blink further elaborates on the subjects of geography, history, nature & technology through themes.

In this way, children explore the world from their immediate environment, progressing from the Netherlands, Europe, to eventually the different continents. They learn about spatial design and natural processes. They also learn to use maps and atlases and develop topographical knowledge.

We also develop children's sense of time in this. This enables children to make connections between now and the past. The children learn to visualize history well, organize and search for information, and use historical material, etc.

Topography

From grade 6, children start exploring the Netherlands; grade 7 focuses on Europe, and grade 8 on the world. For topography, we use the interactive game Topomasters.

Traffic

Everyone must learn to participate safely in traffic as a pedestrian and/or cyclist. That is why we focus on traffic in all grades. In grades 6 and 7, we use the ‘Let’s Go!’-method. The method prepares our students well for the national theoretical and practical traffic exam.

Sexual education

In grade 7, children are introduced to the basic themes of sexual education. The emphasis is on puberty and physical changes, being in love, where babies come from, as well as setting boundaries in (sexual) relations. We use the ‘Liefdesplein’-method for this.

Citizenship

Citizenship education is woven into our method for social-emotional development, Kwink, language education, and world orientation. We also integrate citizenship into our Dalton education by viewing the school as a democracy. We establish class rules together, hold class meetings, and have a student council.

We pay a lot of attention to cultural education by letting children experience culture. We watch dance and theater performances, and the children also actively engage in dancing and theater! In grades 7 and 8, we visit various places of worship. And every year we organize a multi-culti breakfast where children can share and talk about their home culture.

This way, our children are well prepared for the diverse cultures within our country.

Creative development and physical education

Arts, crafts, and drawing

In all grades, children learn arts and crafts techniques, work with paint, clay, plaster, and learn to draw, paint, and even saw. They pay attention to the design of their projects and learn to critically assess them. Not only the technique is important, but even more so it is about individual imagination and creativity.

Music

Singing together, clapping rhythmically, moving to music, and making sounds with instruments, music makes everyone happy! Our teachers provide music lessons that fit the children's world view. For the grades 3, 4, and 5 we have a specialist music teacher who teaches music with instruments such as tambourines, guitars, violins, woodblocks, flutes, music mats, djembés, and more.

Crafts

Twice a year, we organize an art and crafts afternoon. The children then choose a fun activity, such as sawing, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, sewing, modeling, technology (like making a water rocket), or mosaic. In mixed grades, the children engage in creative activities. The crafts afternoon focuses on technical skills collaboration between the different grades.

Physical education

We find moving around extremely important. That is why we use the unique Sportfolio method. We want students to maintain enjoyment in sports, games, and movement. We do not give performance grades for physical education, but instead effort grades. Through incremental goals, students gradually develop their motor skills and become better at playing together. Our Dalton value 'cooperation' is clearly reflected in our movement education. We also pay attention to sportsmanship towards each other.

Our gym class

For grades 1 and 2, we have two playrooms at both locations of the school: one for play lessons and one for climbing and clambering. Our kindergarteners have one movement moment per half-day. In addition, they have gym class once a week from our specialist teacher, Mr. Lucas.

The other grades have gym twice a week from our specialist teachers. This can be either Mr. Lucas or Ms. Eline. Every week, the children are offered different types of sports and games. Naturally, we also apply the Dalton core values during the gym classes.
